Our Story
Hayden Independent Auto Service is a locally owned automotive repair shop built through years of hard work, steady growth, and a commitment to serving the Hayden community.
Owner Darren attended the Automotive Technology Program at North Idaho College in 2005 before entering the automotive industry. Afterward, he worked at various repair shops throughout the area, developing the skills and experience that would eventually lead him to business ownership.
In 2011, Darren purchased Hayden Independent Auto Service from its previous owner. At the time, the business was a small one-bay shop, and Darren was the only employee. He handled every aspect of the operation himself while working to build a reputation for dependable service and quality repairs.
As more customers placed their trust in the shop, Hayden Independent Auto Service continued to grow. Additional rental units were added within the same building, more equipment and vehicle lifts were installed, and new employees joined the team. What began as a one-person operation gradually developed into the full-service repair shop it is today.
Family has always been an important part of the story. Darren's wife, Courtney, grew up north of town and attended Garwood Elementary during its first year of operation. Darren and Courtney have raised three children, Kylie, Olivia, and Collin, in the local community.
In 2025, nearly fifteen years after purchasing the business, Darren purchased the building that Hayden Independent Auto Service calls home. He immediately began renovations and improvements, continuing his long-term investment in both the business and the community it serves.
Today, Hayden Independent Auto Service continues to focus on helping local drivers maintain and repair the vehicles they depend on every day. Darren remains proud to serve the Hayden community and looks forward to continuing that tradition for years to come.
About the Bear

You can't come to Hayden Independent Auto Service without noticing the eight-foot-tall grizzly bear standing outside the business. Built from horseshoes, the bear has become one of the most recognizable features of the property. It also happens to have quite a story behind it.
The bear's story begins in Bozeman, Montana, where Darren's grandfather, Don, owned an auto body shop and campground with full RV hookups. In the 1990s, the bear was created by metal sculptor Jim Dolan for Don. Visitors to the campground were greeted by the bear standing outside the campground office, where it became a familiar landmark for many years.
Jim Dolan is known for several notable works throughout Montana, including the Bleu Horses outside of Three Forks and the geese displayed inside Yellowstone International Airport. The horseshoe bear was one of the many pieces that reflected his distinctive style and craftsmanship.
When Don retired, the bear made its first move. It was relocated from the campground property to Don's home in the Bridger Foothills outside Bozeman. Moving an eight-foot-tall steel bear is no small task, and the project became a family effort. Darren was part of that move as a teenager.
In 2020, Don passed away, and the bear was inherited by the family. For a time, the bear had no permanent home. The family eventually decided that such a unique piece should not remain in storage and deserved to be displayed where people could continue to enjoy it.
In the summer of 2021, the family once again came together to move the bear. After another challenging relocation, the sculpture was erected outside Hayden Independent Auto Service, where it stands today. In many ways, the bear returned to its roots, once again serving as a landmark for a family-owned business.
Today, the horseshoe bear continues to welcome visitors to Hayden Independent Auto Service. Whether it will ever be moved again remains to be seen. One thing is certain: if that day ever comes, it will once again be a family affair.
